For research, inspiration and enjoyment
This month there’s change in the air as we prepare to welcome a new Chief Executive, Rebecca Lawrence, to the Library. Rebecca will be taking up the mantle from Sir Roly Keating in January, leading our continuing work to restore access and services since last year’s cyber-attack. We also have exciting exhibitions newly announced for 2025 that we’d love you to join us for.
Rebecca Lawrence appointed as our new Chief Executive
Our new Chief Executive, Rebecca Lawrence, will be joining us in January 2025.
Rebecca said: “I am honoured to take up this role. The Library is one of the world’s great concentrations of trusted and verified knowledge, and through innovation and technology I believe we can transform access to this tremendous resource, as well as growing and developing it for future generations.”

Our 2025 exhibitions
Next year at St Pancras we’re exploring the transformative – and sometimes radical – power of gardening, uncovering the secrecy of maps, and welcoming families as they set forth on an imaginative journey inspired by our collection. Meanwhile in Leeds, we’ll be delving into the worlds of boxing, calligraphy and football fans.

30 years of National Lottery support
As the National Lottery celebrates 30 years this month, we’re reflecting on all the incredible ways its Heritage Fund has supported us in that time. From major acquisitions to helping us preserve over 350,000 endangered sounds, they’ve been a driving force in our ability to conserve and expand our collection for future generations.

How do we digitise the UK’s oldest sound recordings?
Did you know that the Sound Archive holds the very first sound recordings made in the UK? These were recorded on wax cylinders, made by a man called Colonel Gouraud, Thomas Eddison’s representative in the UK.
The Sound Archive has recently acquired a new machine that allows us to digitise these, and many others, without damaging the fragile groves on their wax surface.

How you can support us
Want to help us share even more of our collection? By supporting our conservation appeal, you’ll help us conserve rare items such as a manuscript that gives an intimate insight into the time Mary, Queen of Scots spent imprisoned, and an Anglo-Saxon gospel fragment which has survived for 1,000 years.
