Eni e Saipem estendono l’accordo di collaborazione nella bioraffinazione
San Donato Milanese (MI), 27 marzo 2025 – Eni e Saipem hanno esteso l’accordo di collaborazione sottoscritto tra le due società nel novembre del 2023 volto a unire le rispettive competenze e specializzazioni in campo industriale per nuovi progetti di interesse di Eni.
L’intesa riguarda in particolare la realizzazione di nuove bioraffinerie, la conversione di raffinerie tradizionali in bioraffinerie e, più in generale, lo sviluppo di nuove iniziative di Eni nell’ambito della trasformazione industriale.
Attraverso questo accordo Eni, in linea con il proprio obiettivo di decarbonizzazione dei processi e dei prodotti, intende sviluppare ulteriormente la propria capacità di bioraffinazione attraverso lo sviluppo di nuove iniziative per la produzione di biocarburanti sia in ambito aviazione (SAF, Sustainable Aviation Fuel) sia per la mobilità terrestre e marittima (HVO, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). Al contempo, Saipem rafforza ulteriormente le proprie competenze distintive nell’ambito della bioraffinazione e della decarbonizzazione.
In linea con l’accordo, Eni ha assegnato di recente a Saipem un contratto per l’avvio delle attività di ingegneria di dettaglio, servizi di approvvigionamento e acquisto delle apparecchiature critiche per il potenziamento della bioraffineria Enilive di Venezia, a Porto Marghera. Il progetto prevede l’incremento di capacità dell’impianto, dalle attuali 400mila tonnellate/anno a 600mila e a partire dal 2027, anche la produzione di biocarburante sostenibile per l’aviazione (SAF).
Sempre nell’ambito dell’accordo, Eni ha assegnato a Saipem, nel mese di novembre 2024, un contratto per la conversione della raffineria di Livorno in bioraffineria con una capacità di 500mila tonnellate di carica biogenica: il progetto prevede l’applicazione della tecnologia Ecofining™, sviluppata da Eni e Honeywell UOP, per la produzione di biocarburanti idrogenati HVO. L’impianto di Livorno sarà realizzato in modo tale da permettere, con opportune modifiche tecniche, un eventuale successivo upgrading per la produzione di SAF.
Sia per il progetto di Livorno che per quello di Venezia, Saipem ha svolto anche tutte le attività di ingegneria propedeutiche alla fase esecutiva quali gli Studi di Fattibilità ed i Front End Engineering Design. Il valore complessivo di entrambi i contratti è attualmente pari a circa 320 milioni di euro.
Eni, attraverso la controllata Enilive, ha oggi una capacità produttiva in ambito bioraffinazione pari a 1,65 milioni di tonnellate/anno e l’obiettivo è di incrementarla a oltre 5 milioni entro il 2030.
Eni è stata la prima compagnia al mondo a convertire due raffinerie tradizionali, a Venezia Porto Marghera e a Gela, in bioraffinerie per la lavorazione di materie prime di scarto, come oli esausti da cucina, grassi animali, residui dell’industria agroalimentare e oli vegetali. Saipem, in qualità di Engineering, procurement service and Construction Management contractor, ha infatti già seguito il progetto di conversione della bioraffineria di Venezia e in parte, per la sola ingegneria, anche di quella di Gela, e ha pertanto maturato competenze distintive nell’ambito di soluzioni per la riduzione dell’impronta carbonica di impianti nuovi ed esistenti.
Attraverso questa collaborazione Eni e Saipem confermano inoltre l’impegno per una trasformazione che valorizzi l’intera filiera energetica, coinvolgendo tutti i fornitori interessati dai progetti nell’alleanza di sistema Open-es, per un rafforzamento della competitività dell’industria italiana.

San Donato Milanese (Italy), March 27, 2025 – Eni and Saipem extended the collaboration agreement signed between the two companies in November 2023 to combine their respective skills and specializations in the industrial field for new projects of Eni’s interest.
The agreement concerns, in particular, the construction of new biorefineries, the conversion of traditional refineries into biorefineries and, generally, the development of new initiatives by Eni in the field of industrial transformation.
Through this agreement, Eni, in line with its goal of decarbonizing processes and products, intends to further develop its biorefining capacity through the development of new initiatives to produce biofuels both for aviation (SAF, Sustainable Aviation Fuel) and for land and sea mobility (HVO, Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil). At the same time, Saipem further strengthens its distinctive expertise in biorefining and decarbonization.
In line with the agreement, Eni has recently awarded Saipem a contract for the start-up of detailed engineering, procurement services and the purchase of critical equipment for the upgrading of the Enilive biorefinery in Porto Marghera, next to Venice. The project provides for the increase in the capacity of the plant, from the current 400 thousand tons/year to 600 thousand and, starting from 2027, also the production of sustainable aviation biofuel (SAF).
Also, as part of the agreement, Eni awarded Saipem, in November 2024, a contract for the conversion of the Livorno refinery into a biorefinery with a capacity of 500 thousand tons of biogenic charge: the project involves the application of Ecofining™ technology, developed by Eni and Honeywell UOP, for the production of HVO hydrogenated biofuels. The Livorno plant will be built in such a way as to allow, with appropriate technical modifications, a possible subsequent upgrading to produce SAF.
For both the Livorno and Venice projects, Saipem also carried out all the engineering activities preparatory to the executive phase, such as Feasibility Studies and Front-End Engineering Design. The total value of both contracts is currently approximately €320 million.
Eni, through its subsidiary Enilive, currently has a production capacity in the biorefining sector of 1.65 million tons/year and the goal is to increase it to over 5 million by 2030.
Eni was the first company in the world to convert two traditional refineries, in Venice Porto Marghera and Gela, into biorefineries for the processing of waste raw materials, such as used cooking oils, animal fats, residues from the agri-food industry and vegetable oils. Saipem, as an engineering, procurement service and construction management contractor, has already executed the project for the conversion of the Venice biorefinery and partly, for the sole engineering, also of the Gela biorefinery, and has therefore gained distinctive skills in the field of solutions for reducing the carbon footprint of new and existing plants.
Through this collaboration, Eni and Saipem also confirm their commitment to a transformation that enhances the entire energy supply chain, including all the suppliers involved in the projects in the Open-es system alliance, for strengthening the competitiveness of Italian industry.
