Sojern at TTG: a positive summer, but not reaching pre-pandemic results
Late bookings for the Christmas holidays. How flows are changing and how to work in marketing in an increasingly fluid market
A complex summer in which various factors influenced airline and hotel booking searches, with sudden fluctuations sometimes due to important external factors (climate, rising costs, inflation) that could also affect the upcoming Christmas holidays. Detecting airline and hotel booking search trends is Sojern, the tourism marketing platform with 10,000 customers worldwide, 300 integrated search engines, more than 350 million traveler profiles analysed every month added to a data pool of 100 major travel companies. Present at TTG Rimini in Hall A1 stand 216, Sojern unveils strategies to boost the business and profitability of tourist destinations and hotel accommodation through the cutting-edge technology of its Travel Marketing Platform.
Summer 2023 compared to 2022
Comparing the summer of 2022 with this year, overall searches for flights to Italy saw a 15% increase, due to a significant rise in searches from long-haul markets (+35%), and more modest interest from European (+9%) and Italian travellers in Italy (+4%).
On the other hand, searches for hotel bookings fell by -16% compared to summer 2022, due to a 42% drop in domestic interest, offset by searches from European and international travellers which grew by 10% and 12% respectively.
Summer 2023 compared to 2019
This summer we have not yet reached the results of 2019, but we are close: total flight booking searches are down -12% compared to pre-pandemic, mostly due to the domestic market (-34%) and partly offset by searches from European (+9%) and international travellers (+12%).
Instead, we should be closer to 2019 in the last four months of the year for both hotel and flight searches to Italy. The top markets for Italy, based on hotel and flight booking searches in mid-September, are Italy itself, followed by France, the US, the UK and Germany.
Christmas holidays
For the upcoming Christmas holidays, Sojern instead reads a drop in flight booking searches of 5% overall compared to 2022, with a weakening of the domestic market to -43%, offset however by interest in Europe (+2%) and other international destinations (+1%). The picture for the hotel sector is more positive, with growth of 38% compared to 2022, with a significant rise in domestic (53%), European (24%) and international (34%) tourism.
All this can also be read as a return to last-minute bookings, at least for flights. If the current picture were to be confirmed, it would in fact mean that currently 74% of the flights for the Christmas season have not yet been booked, and action would have to be taken accordingly.
In any case, those who have already booked their Christmas holidays in Italy will arrive before 25 December. Italians and Europeans choose 23 December for their departure, while long-haul tourists are ready to leave on 21 or 22 December or the weekend before (16/17 December).
The markets of origin of these Christmas holidaymakers interested in Italy, worldwide, based on airline flight searches in the last 30 days are: United States (21.4%) followed by France (11.8%) and Germany (10.6%). In the ranking of favourite places for the Christmas holidays, again based on flight searches, Italy holds an important place for Americans and Canadians for whom Rome is in third place.
Target market for Italy
Beyond the Christmas holidays, the markets most interested in Italy, according to the last two months’ surveys in the hotel sector, are: first and foremost the domestic market, which accounts for 37% of searches, followed by the United States (13.9% of searches) and France (7.2%). These travellers mainly come from: Milan, Rome, San Francisco, Naples, Turin, Paris, Florence, New York, London and Los Angeles. On the other hand, according to flight booking searches, the markets of origin of tourism to Italy are: Italy itself (18.9%), followed by the USA (13.1%) and Germany (12.2%). The cities from which these travellers depart are London, Milan, Rome, Paris, Madrid, New York, Frankfurt, Dusseldorf and Zurich.
“These analyses show positive aspects of tourism to Italy, but also the importance of constant attention to the sudden changes in the market, influenced by unpredictable external factors,” says Luca Romozzi, Sojern’s Europe sales director. “We need to be ready for the levers of attraction of certain markets, for the changing choices of users, and this is only possible through advanced tools at the marketing level, with a multi-channel technological approach, with the widest possible pool of data, and with an integrated AI in this system, able to direct investments, personalized choices, optimizing the profitability of companies and the attractiveness of destinations”.
