Stay ahead of surprise leaks
Holiday travel, colder temperatures and rainfall can all increase the chances of hidden leaks going unnoticed.
According to Utilities staff, even a small leak such as a running toilet or a stuck irrigation valve can waste thousands of gallons if left unchecked.
Get an alert before a surprise leak becomes a surprise bill by signing up for a free account on the City of Sacramento’s water-tracking website.
With this tool, customers can set up email or text alerts for potential leaks and view their water use by the month, week, day or even hour.

Staff feature – Kelly Cunningham
As a senior staff assistant in our Engineering & Water Resources Division, Kelly Cunningham says no two days are the same—and she wouldn’t have it any other way.
From coordinating travel for trainings and conferences to managing a small fleet of vehicles, she supports more than 90 full-time employees with a wide range of administrative needs.
Kelly says her favorite part of the job is the people she works with, and that her flexible, people-focused style fits naturally within the team’s precision-driven environment.
Outside of work, she’s focused on completing her degree at Sacramento State but still makes time each summer to attend ‘Broadway at Music Circus’ performances with her family.
Simple ways to keep your home storm-ready
As winter storms roll in, a little preparation can go a long way in protecting your home and neighborhood.
Start by clearing leaves and debris from gutters, downspouts and nearby storm drains so rainwater can flow freely.
Securing your trash and recycling bins ahead of windy weather also helps prevent them from tipping over.
If you see street flooding or a clogged storm drain, report it to 311 so crews can respond quickly.
