Day of Remembrance Honours Workers Killed, Injured at Work: Reyes
The Manitoba government is encouraging all Manitobans to observe a moment of solemn reflection to commemorate workers who lost their lives or suffered a work-related injury or illness, Labour and Immigration Minister Jon Reyes announced today.
“April 28 is the International Day of Mourning for workers killed or injured as a result of their work,” said Reyes. “This day gives us all a chance to remember and honour the Manitobans who did not return home safely from work last year.”
Last year, 21 Manitobans lost their lives as a result of work-related incidents and occupational diseases, and many more were hurt seriously enough to cause permanent injury or require time away from their jobs, the minister noted.
“Of course, those lost were much more than workers. They were our family members, friends, colleagues and neighbours,” said Reyes. “As we remember the past and look to the future, I call on all Manitobans to renew their commitment to occupational safety and health, and continue working together to ensure all workers come home safely.”
Flags will be lowered to half-mast at all provincial government buildings to mark the day, the minister added.
