The Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) will launch its flagship report The State of the World’s Land and Water Resources for Food and Agriculture 2025 (SOLAW 2025) during a side event of the 179th Session of the FAO Council, which meets in Rome from 1 to 5 December 2025.
SOLAW 2025, themed “The potential to produce more and better”, examines how countries can unlock the hidden and untapped potential of the world’s land, soil and water resources to meet rising food needs in a sustainable way. The report provides science-based evidence, key findings, and actionable recommendations for policymakers at all levels.
The report will outline the major global trends shaping the state of land and water resources, including the growing pressures on soils, water availability and ecosystems, the limits to further agricultural expansion, and the opportunities to increase production sustainably. It will also highlight how climate change is reshaping land suitability and water demand, and how adopting more integrated and sustainable land, soil and water management practices can help countries produce more and better while protecting vital ecosystems.
Despite these challenges, SOLAW 2025 shows that the world still has the potential to feed up to 10.3 billion people by 2085—but only if countries adopt more efficient, inclusive and sustainable land, soil and water management practices, including reducing yield gaps, using crops suited to local conditions, and strengthening resource governance.
Launch Event at FAO Headquarters – 1 December, 12:30–14:00 (CET)
The event will be held in the Sheikh Zayed Centre and webcast online, with interpretation in all six UN languages.
Opening remarks will be delivered by:
* QU Dongyu, Director-General, FAO
* Alvaro Lario, President of IFAD and Chair of UN-Water
Yasmine Fouad, Executive Secretary, United Nations Convention to Combat Desertification (UNCCD)
Lifeng Li, Director of FAO’s Land and Water Division, will present the main findings and recommendations of SOLAW 2025. This will be followed by interventions from Permanent Representatives of FAO Member Countries.
