CUT mourns the passing of a student
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) is deeply saddened to confirm the sudden and tragic passing of one of our students at the Welkom Campus on Monday, 29 September 2025.
Ms T.M. Tilo, a fourth (4th) year student enrolled in the Bachelor of Education (B.Ed.) Economics and Management Science programme, sadly, succumbed to a short illness during class. This heartbreaking incident occurred in the presence of fellow students and staff and has deeply affected the entire campus community.
The University is working closely with the Dean of Students and the student leadership to ensure that all affected individuals receive the necessary emotional and psychological support during this difficult time.
Counselling services have been made available to students and staff through the CUT Wellness Centre. In light of this tragedy, and in remembrance of the student, all academic activities at the Welkom Campus will be suspended on Tuesday, 30 September 2025.
“CUT extends its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, classmates, and lecturers of Ms Tilo. This is a profound loss of a young life with so much promise, and we mourn together as a university community. May the departed soul of Ms Tilo rest in eternal peace,” said CUT Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Prof. Pamela Dube.
