Safely dispose of hazardous household materials
It’s time for spring cleaning, and that means clearing out clutter, including hazardous household materials that need special disposal.
Items such as paint, batteries, antifreeze, gasoline, fluorescent lamps and pesticides should not be discarded in regular trash due to their potential environmental hazards.
Sacramento residents can drop off these items for free at the Sacramento Recycling and Transfer Station (8491 Fruitridge Road) from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., Tuesday through Saturday.

These items may seem harmless when poured down the kitchen drain, but they can build up over time and lead to costly clogs and sewer backups.
Dispose of fats, oils and grease the right way by letting them cool, pouring them into a sealable container, and then throwing them in the trash.
