(AGENPARL) – ven 17 maggio 2024 International Tea Day 2024: “Honouring women around the world, from crop to cup”
FAO to host global event on 21 May, 09:00-CEST
Each year International Tea Day is an opportunity to celebrate the cultural heritage, health benefits and economic importance of tea, while working to make its production sustainable, ensuring its benefits for people, cultures and the environment continue for generations.
Celebrated under the theme “Honouring women around the world, from crop to cup“, this year’s event shines a spotlight on women in the tea sector, highlighting their diverse contributions across the supply chain and addressing the challenges they face.
Tea production and trade play pivotal roles in employment, income generation, export earnings and food security in many developing countries, including some of the poorest rural areas globally.
In this context, on Tuesday, 21 May 2024, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting a global celebration for International Tea Day 2024 at its Rome headquarters.
The event will be inaugurated by FAO Director-General QU Dongyu and it will be followed by a dialogue with the participation of women from the tea and coffee sectors.
The event will be webcast here.
It will include an exhibition in collaboration with the Globally Important Agricultural Heritage Systems (GIAHS) programme that will focus on four designated sites: The Pu’er Traditional Tea Agrosystem in China; the traditional tea-grass system in Shizuoka, Japan; the Fuzhou Jasmine System in China; and, Traditional Hadong Tea Agrosystem in Korea.
The exhibition aims to educate visitors about the key role the sector plays for women and rural livelihoods, and its contribution to the achievement of the Sustainable Development Goals, and in particular showcase the significance of women along the tea value chain.
A tea-tasting and coffee tasting event will also take place at FAO, in collaboration with the United Nations Women’s Guild.
