Province Ready to Welcome Athletes from Around the World: Khan
The Manitoba government is excited to cheer on participants, coaches, and officials representing Manitoba at the World Police & Fire Games, in Winnipeg from tomorrow until Aug. 6, Sport, Culture and Heritage Minister Obby Khan announced today.
“Our government is proud to support law enforcement, firefighters, and police officers in all they do to make our province a safer place for everyone and now we’re excited to watch them represent our province in events that they have dedicated countless hours of training to,” said Khan. “As a former athlete, I know the incredible amount of work that goes on behind the scenes to compete at a high level, and these athletes will get the great feeling of performing in front of amazing Manitoba crowds while being recognized for the hard work they do on the front lines.”
Manitoba has more than 900 competitors participating in the games at more than 40 venues in and around Winnipeg. Opening ceremonies will take place tomorrow at Canada Life Centre to welcome participants from more than 60 countries.
In addition, more than 2,500 volunteers have signed up to help make these events a success, the minister noted.
“Manitobans are proud to support their community and volunteer, and this event is no exception,” added Khan. “I am inspired by the incredible people who will come together to make sure this event is a success and be a part of the community spirit that is found in Winnipeg.”
The World Police & Fire Games will host over 5,000 law enforcement officers, firefighters and first responders, who are participating in the 10-day competition featuring 63 events. Held biennially, the games are an Olympic-style competition with participants from around the world.
Events will take place all across Winnipeg and surrounding communities, and include competitions in angling, dragon boat racing, rugby, tennis, triathlon and more.
