Statement from Premier Heather Stefanson on
Bilateral Agreement Following Acceptance of
New Federal Health Funding
I had a productive meeting today with federal Minister of Intergovernmental Affairs, Infrastructure and Communities Dominic LeBlanc and federal Minister of Health Jean-Yves Duclos to advance our mutual commitments toward a bilateral agreement on new federal health-care funding. Manitoba Health Minister Audrey Gordon and Manitoba Finance Minister Cliff Cullen accompanied me and also participated in these constructive discussions.
The federal funding package first presented on Feb. 7 involves a series of phases before formal contribution agreements are possible after the federal budget, but excellent progress was made on key first steps and shared priorities, and focused followup work will now proceed between federal and provincial officials.
Additional federal funds will build on the record provincial investments being made in our health-care system, as the Manitoba government continues to deliver improvements for Manitobans and address challenges caused by the pandemic. Ongoing work continues under the Diagnostic and Surgical Recovery Task Force and through the Health Human Resource Action Plan to help retain, train and recruit additional health-care professionals, while our government also provides additional supports for seniors care, mental health and addictions, and building additional capacity across the health-care system.
