WORLD FOOD WEEK 2024
14-18 October – World Food Forum (WFF) 2024
The fourth edition of the World Food Forum (WFF), the largest annual gathering of agrifood systems stakeholders globally, will be held at FAO headquarters in Rome to find concrete solutions to the world’s food and climate crises. Organized around three pillars – Youth , Science and Innovation and Investment – it will bring together world leaders, renowned experts, investors and impassioned changemakers of all ages around the theme: “Good food for all, for today and tomorrow”.
This year, the WFF will also feature the important issues of the future of family farming, water scarcity in agriculture, and Indigenous practices in support of a sustainable food future. A full programme of the 2024 WFF can be found online here.
16 October (10:00 CEST) – World Food Day 2024
The theme of World Food Day 2024 is “Right to foods for a better life and a better future”, underlining the need for universal access to enough diverse, nutritious, affordable, and safe foods.
The day will also see the launch of the “80-1 Countdown” to
FAO’s 80th anniversary, marking FAO’s eight decades of
growing and working together to improve global food security and nutrition, through 365 days of action that build momentum in the lead-up to FAO’s milestone event in October 2025.
This special event will present the upcoming Food and
Agriculture Museum and Network, a permanent exhibition and educational experience open to the public, set to open in October 2025 as part of a collaboration between FAO and host country, Italy.
The global ceremony will take place at FAO Headquarters in Rome, 10:00 CEST on 16 October 2024. Participating will be QU Dongyu, FAO Director-General; a representative of the Italian Government; King Letsie III of Lesotho, FAO Special Goodwill Ambassador for Nutrition; Ophelia Nick, Parliamentary State Secretary, Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture of Germany; Cindy Hensley McCain, Executive Director, World Food Programme (WFP); Gérardine Mukeshimana, Vice-President, International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD).
There will also be special messages from Pope Francis, UN Secretary-General António Guterres, and Cary Fowler, Special Envoy for Global Food Security with the US Department of State and 2024 World Food Prize Laureate. The ceremony will close with the presentation of the FAO Achievement Award.
On October 17 at 14:00 CEST, the Junior World Food Day School Assembly, an educational event aimed at encouraging youth action will take place at FAO headquarters. Special guests include the Harlem Globetrotters exhibition basketball team, as well as chef and food hero Max Mariola, sustainable fashion activist and food hero Matteo Ward, Climate and Social Entrepreneur Andile Mnguni, and Gender and Human Rights Youth Activist Shreyaa Venkat. Together with international food experts, they will tell inspiring stories and engage youth through quizzes, games live music and dance performances.
Global Family Farming Forum
To mark the halfway point of the UN Decade of Family Farming, a Global Forum will be held between 15 and 17 October. Co-organized by FAO and IFAD, the event will celebrate the importance of family farming, identify policy innovations and showcase successful experiences from all over the world. A key part of the Global Family Farming Forum will be a radio station, broadcasting discussions, interviews and roundtables to millions of listeners in rural areas all over the world.
Rome Water Dialogue
This special session is titled “High-Level Rome Water Dialogue on WASAG” Global Framework on Water Scarcity in Agriculture. It aims to enhance the visibility, commitment, and impact of the WASAG partnership, hosted by FAO, which was launched in 2016 to tackle the collective challenge of optimizing water use in agriculture to ensure food security.
Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems
The Global-Hub on Indigenous Peoples’ Food Systems is revolutionizing the co-creation of knowledge. The Global-Hub’s core objective is to assert the importance of Indigenous Peoples’ oral knowledge within global policy processes. Knowledge that is vanishing rapidly. The Global-Hub brings together as equals, Indigenous and non-Indigenous researchers and gives the same respect to academic and Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge. Often overlooked by policymakers, Indigenous Peoples’ knowledge offers game-changing solutions to modern challenges related to the climate crisis and the sustainable transformation of food systems.
From 14-18 October, the Global-Hub will gather its experts in a Saami Indigenous Nomadic tent from the Arctic. The tent will become an Indigenous territory inside FAO at the heart of Rome. The meeting will gather 50 experts —50% Indigenous Peoples, 50% women — from 15 universities, 12 Indigenous organizations and 2 Indigenous global research networks. A second Indigenous Arctic nomadic tent will host open events and discussions on burning topics that affect Indigenous Peoples’ lives, from the impact of carbon credit markets on nature’s defenders to the impacts of ultra-processed foods on Indigenous youth.
