(AGENPARL) – mer 20 marzo 2024 Following the earthquake that struck the area of Petrinja in 2020, a group of European scientists joined to
launch a long-term geological, geomorphological and paleoseismological collaboration with the objective to
contribute to the understanding of the seismic behaviour of the Petrinja and nearby faults and to support
nationwide seismic hazard studies including the data from active faults and seismo-induced natural effects.
With these premises, the scientists from the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy (Istituto
Nazionale di Geofisica e Vulcanologia) and the Croatian Geological Survey (Hrvatski Geološki Institut) signed
a Memorandum of Understanding which was the basis for the development of a common project under the
aegis of the Italian Embassy in Zagreb. This project involves the transfer of knowledge and expertise in
different Earth science fields, methodologies, technologies and instrumentation. The funding provided by the
Embassy of Italy in Zagreb over the last two years contributed to a preliminary mapping of the active faults in
the region of Zagreb and Petrinja, the definition of a preliminary seismic history of the Petrinja fault, and a
revisitation of the 2020 coseismic liquefaction occurrences. All the results are harmonized and shared through a
web GIS platform. Finally,
the Embassy of Italy in Zagreb
organises the presentation of the
Earthquake Geology Studies in Central Croatia: Active Faults and Seismic Potential
conducted by the National Institute of Geophysics and Volcanology, Italy,
in collaboration with the Croatian Geological Survey
