BLOOMSDAY FESTIVAL 2023
MUSICAL HIGHLIGHTS
With less than a month to go before Bloomsday Festival 2023 it’s time to start thinking about the soundtrack to your celebrations. Here’s a list of some of the wonderful musical events that are going to be taking place this year throughout the celebrations. Events are selling out quickly so book early to avoid disappointment!
9/10th June: James Joyce’s Dubliners Interpreted in Song by Hibsen
Irish folk music act Hibsen pay homage to James Joyce with performances of their debut album “The Stern Task of Living” under the aegis of the Bloomsday Festival, with thanks to Irish Life and AVIVA for sponsoring the performances.
“The Stern Task of Living” is a collection of 15 original songs, one for each short story in Dubliners, with the lyrics and music written by Jim Murphy and Gráinne Hunt. Each song captures the essence of its story though its lyrics and the sentiment of its story through its music.
An ensemble of ten musicians, including the string quartet Musici, will perform the full album live. In addition, Frank McNally of The Irish Times will recite selected passages from Dubliners at various points during the performance.

16th June: Re-Joyce!
Sacred Music in Ulysses with the Palestrina Choir
This Bloomsday, experience a glorious evening of sacred music from Ulysses and other works by James Joyce. Coinciding with the celebration of the Palestrina Choir’s 120th year anniversary, this special concert will explore the musical life of Joyce’s Dublin as well as Joycean links with both the Palestrina Choir and the Pro-Cathedral itself. Sit back and listen to readings from Joyce’s work and some of the most beautiful sacred music ever written, including Palestrina’s Missa Papae Marcelli, Mozart’s Twelfth Mass, and Handel’s Hallelujah Chorus. Don’t miss this incredible musical collaboration presented by Darina Gallagher, Director of the James Joyce Centre, and Blánaid Murphy, Director of the Palestrina Choir of St. Mary’s Pro-Cathedral.

15th June: A Joycean Evening at Dalkey Castle
Begin your Joycean celebrations on the eve of Bloomsday in Dalkey Castle & Heritage Centre on Thursday, June 15th at 8pm. A team of actors will perform enlightening extracts from Ulysses, Dubliners, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man and more. Baritone Simon Morgan will be joined by Soprano Donna Malone in songs that James Joyce sang or which feature in his work. They will be ably accompanied by Josh Johnston. Refreshments will be served

11th June: The Siren Sessions
The song of the siren barmaids lures many of the characters in Ulysses to the Ormond Hotel for an afternoon sing-song. ‘O wept – aren’t men frightful idiots’ – Miss Douce laughs.
On June 11th the Bloomsday Festival will open the glorious Georgian doors of the Joyce Centre on North Great Georges Street for an intimate evening of song and readings from and inspired by Ulysses.
Bringing to life the Sirens chapter of Ulysses, this very special event for Ulysses 100th anniversary will focus on the musicality of Joyce and the music that inspired him.
Featuring readings and songs from some of Ireland’s finest contemporary musicians, accompanied by pianist Bryan Mullen. Chanteuse Camille O’Sullivan and Songs of Joyce will transport the audience back to 1904 with songs of and inspired by the era.
