Committee meetings
Combating child sexual abuse.* The Civil Liberties, Justice and Home Affairs Committee will adopt its position on updated legislation to advance the fight against online sexual abuse and the exploitation of children, particularly following recent technological developments. The draft bill provides for the inclusion of child sexual abuse material in deep fakes or AI-generated material in the definition of the crime of child sexual abuse, as well as provisions to improve cross-border investigations and victim support /(Tuesday). /
Tariffs on agriculture goods from Russia and Belarus.* The International Trade Committee will vote on an increase in customs duties on imports of certain agricultural products and fertilisers originating in Russia or Belarus to significantly reduce the importation of these products into the EU /(Thursday). /
EU electricity grids.* The Industry, Research and Energy Committee will adopt its recommendations on ensuring the stability and efficiency of electricity grids to contribute to the EU’s energy transition. Investments in modernising infrastructure, increasing cross-border transmission capacity and integrating renewable energy sources are among the proposals on which the committee will vote /(Tuesday). /
Simplification/carbon border adjustment mechanism.* As part of the so-called Omnibus I proposal, the Commission’s effort at reducing EU red tape, the Environment, Climate and Food Safety Committee will vote on the simplification of the EU carbon border adjustment mechanism (CBAM). CBAM is designed to prevent the risk of carbon leakage and reduce global carbon emissions /(Tuesday). /
EU ethics body.* The Constitutional Affairs Committee will vote on a proposal to amend Parliament’s internal rules to allow for the creation of an Interinstitutional Body on Ethical Standards. Its primary tasks would be to develop common minimum standards, consider the self-assessments of EU institutions, and foster interinstitutional cooperation /(Wednesday)/.
Recovery investments under scrutiny. *The Budgets and Economic and Monetary Affairs committees will assess the implementation of the Recovery and Resilience Facility (RRF), with over 40% of the funds now disbursed. MEPs will assess the impact of the RRF, propose improvements and draw lessons for the future, in particular in view of the discussions on the post-2027 long-term EU budget /(Tuesday). /
President’s diary*. On Monday, President Metsola will participate in the Conference of Speakers of European Union Parliaments in Budapest, where she will give a keynote speech. On Tuesday, she will meet the European Ombudsman, Teresa Anjinho, and she will give a speech during an event organised by German tv channels ARD and ZDF. On Thursday, she will meet representatives of the Down Syndrome Association of Malta, and on Friday she will participate in the European Political Community Summit in Tirana.
