(AGENPARL) - Roma, 16 Maggio 2023(AGENPARL) – BRUXELLES mar 16 maggio 2023
On 24 May, Members will consider amendments to the draft report on the Sustainable use of plant protection products Regulation.
The proposal of the Commission sets legally binding targets at EU level to reduce by 50 % the use and the risk of chemical pesticides as well as the use of the more hazardous pesticides by 2030, in line with the EU’s ‘farm to fork’ strategy. The proposal would ban the use of all pesticides in sensitive areas (and within three metres of those areas). In her draft report, Ms. Wiener proposes to raise the EU-level reduction target for the use of the more hazardous pesticides to 80% by 2030; and to shift the reference period for the targets to 2018-2020, instead of 2015-2017. Concerning sensitive areas, the rapporteur suggests allowing derogations from the general ban on pesticide use to products approved for organic farming for certain types of areas. To ensure that enough resources are available for implementing the regulation, the rapporteur proposes to consider the creation of a state fund which could be fed, inter alia, by a risk-based levy or tax on plant protection products.
