Esteemed CUT scholar reflects on counterproductive work behaviour
The Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) hosted the Inaugural Lecture by Professor Crispen Chipunza, titled: Typology, pervasiveness, and nature-nurture controversy of counter-productive work behaviour: Lessons for HR Practice.
The lecture focused on Counterproductive work behaviour with an interest in higher education. For effective human resource management, Prof Chipunza recommends competency-based recruitment, stating incompetency breeds deviant behaviour. He also recommended using behavioural and integrity tests for conscientiousness, rule adherence, attitudes towards theft, etc.
Other recommendations include enhancing organisational justice, balancing perceptions of fairness, including fair policies, rules, procedures, and compensation structures, and focusing on job performance and regular monitoring mechanisms.
“Counterproductive or deviant work behaviours are complex and can be viewed from different perspectives. The genesis of their antecedents can be individual or organisational, and managing it in an organisation requires knowledge of different types of antecedents. These types of behaviours not only impact the quality of work produced by the employee engaging in counterproductive work behaviours but can also negatively affect the productivity of other employees in the company and create undesirable risks for the employer. However, we should also remember that not all counterproductive work behaviours have negative consequences,” concluded Prof Chipunza.
Professor Chipunza is a full Professor of Human Resources Management and Assistant Dean: Research, Innovation, and Engagement in the Faculty of Management Sciences. He has 25 years of teaching experience in the higher education sector, having started as a junior lecturer at the University of Zimbabwe. He joined CUT as a senior lecturer in January 2011 and has successfully supervised 30 Honours, 23 Masters and 5 PhD students. To date, Prof Chipunza has published over 50 articles in accredited national and international journals and written more than five chapters in books. He has also attended and presented more than 35 papers at national and international conferences.
CUT Acting Vice-Chancellor and Principal, Dr Sally Dzingwa, stated that an inaugural lecture is held in recognition of academics for their prowess as researchers of note in their respective fields and as a vehicle for academics to contribute to the university’s academic project and the intellectual discourse to analyse the past and present so that the university remains relevant to its mandate of teaching and learning, research, and community engagements.
“As a university, we have recorded significant progress in pursuit of teaching and learning, research, innovation, and community engagement. These are among countless examples of our academics’ work across the university, such as Prof Crispen Chipunza in the Faculty of Management Sciences, whom the university is honouring for his many roles in academia this evening. He will take us on his academic journey of many years to see how his calling contributes to the university to bridge the gap between applied research and its impact on the sector and workplace,” said Dr Dzingwa.
Prof Chipunza’s lecture will play a critical role in linking the university’s endeavours with the external professional community in his field of speciality and guide current industry trends shaping corporate behaviour.
