Council of Europe Secretary General Alain Berset to pay official visit to Latvia
10-11 September, Riga (Latvia) – Secretary General ( Alain Berset will pay his first official visit to Latvia. During the visit, he will meet with President of the Republic Edgars Rinkēvičs, Minister for Foreign Affairs Baiba Braže and Speaker of the Parliament (Saeima) Daiga Mieriņa and participate in a roundtable discussion on Ukraine's future at the Riga Conference 2026 ( on 10 September. He will also meet with civil society representatives.
Mr Berset will give a guest lecture at the University of Latvia and take questions from students. In addition, he will visit the NATO Strategic Communications Centre of Excellence and the Occupation Museum of Latvia.
On 11 September, the Secretary General will attend a Flower Laying Ceremony at the Freedom Monument together with the Minister for Foreign Affairs of the Republic of Latvia.

7 September, Zurich (Switzerland) – To mark the second anniversary of the opening for signature of its Framework Convention on Artificial Intelligence ( , the Council of Europe will hold, together with the Albert Einstein School of Public Policy, the conference "Trustworthy AI for Human Rights, Democracy and Rule of Law", as the flagship event of the inaugural AI Governance Forum. Representatives of public authorities, academia, civil society and industry will discuss how the convention's principles can be translated into practice, consider governance challenges arising from emerging technologies, and discuss Switzerland's path towards implementation and ratification. The convention, the first-ever international legally binding treaty in this field, has been signed ( so far by 20 states across Europe and beyond and by the EU.

8 September, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing four judgments concerning Azerbaijan, Georgia, Greece and the Netherlands.
