Council of Europe Congress to assess the application of the European Charter of Local Self-Government in the Slovak Republic
The Congress delegation will meet with Tomáš Oparty, State Secretary of the Ministry of the Interior, Luboš Jan?ík, Deputy Minister of Finance, ?ubomír Andrassy, President of the Supreme Audit Office, Matúš Vallo, Mayor of Bratislava and Richard Rybní?ek, Mayor of Tren?ín. A meeting is also planned with Róbert Dobrovodsky, Public Defender of Rights and Jozef Sedlák, Deputy Prosecutor General.
The programme also includes meetings with the mayors of Cifer, Košeca, Komárno, Ve?ký Krtíš, Partizánske and Kálnica, representatives of Bratislava, Prešov, Banská Bystrica and Tren?ín self-governing regions, as well as members of the Association of Towns and Communities of Slovakia, representatives of the Union of Slovak Towns and Cities, and members the Slovakian delegation to the Congress.

The Slovak Republic ratified the European Charter of Local Self-Government in 2000. The countries which have ratified the Charter are bound by its provisions. The Charter requires compliance with a minimum number of rights, which form the European bedrock of local self-government. The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities makes sure that these principles are observed.

The Congress of Local and Regional Authorities is an institution of the Council of Europe, responsible for strengthening local and regional democracy in its 46 member states. Composed of two chambers – the Chamber of Local Authorities and the Chamber of Regions – and three committees, it brings together 612 elected officials representing more than 130 000 local and regional authorities.
