Ward 25, Scarborough-Rouge Park by-election set for Monday, September 29
Toronto City Clerk John D. Elvidge has announced the following dates for the Ward 25, Scarborough-Rouge Park by-election:
– Nominations will open on Monday, June 23 at 8:30 a.m.
– Nominations will close on Friday, August 15 at 2 p.m.
– Advance voting will be available on Saturday, September 20 and Sunday, September 21 from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
– Election day will be held on Monday, September 29 with voting places open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m.
At its meeting on Wednesday, May 21 and Thursday, May 22, Toronto City Council declared the office of Councillor for Ward 25, Scarborough-Rouge Park vacant and opted to fill the vacancy by holding a by-election. The bylaw authorizing this by-election will come into force on Sunday, June 22 at 11:59 p.m.
Mail-in voting will be offered as an alternative voting option in the Ward 25, Scarborough-Rouge Park by-election, provided Canada Post services are available and operating normally.
Potential candidates are reminded that, under the Municipal Elections Act, 1996 (MEA), they cannot incur campaign expenses or accept campaign contributions until after filing nomination papers with the City Clerk. Information about the MEA can be found on the Ontario government’s website: https://www.ontario.ca/laws/statute/96m32.
The timing of the by-election is determined by the City Clerk independent of Council. Under the MEA, the City Clerk fixes nomination day (close of nominations) between 30 and 60 days after the passing of a bylaw indicating a by-election is required. Election day occurs 45 days after nomination day.
