Eni: accordo in Costa d’Avorio per tutelare e ripristinare 14 foreste in un’area totale di 155.000 ettari
L’obiettivo è proteggere e restaurare il patrimonio forestale ivoriano, che nel secolo scorso ha perso circa il 90% della propria superficie. Il progetto, gestito da Eni in collaborazione con le istituzioni del Paese, avrà una durata iniziale di 20 anni.
San Donato Milanese (MI), 28 Novembre 2024 – Eni ha firmato oggi la convenzione con il Ministero delle Acque e delle Foreste della Costa d’Avorio per lanciare un progetto di conservazione e ripristino della superficie forestale nel Paese.
L’iniziativa, che fa seguito allo studio di fattibilità avviato a settembre 2022 coinvolgendo gli stakeholder locali, interesserà 14 foreste, identificate in stretta collaborazione con le autorità competenti, su un’area di 155.000 ettari, nelle regioni di Lagunes e Comoé, situate rispettivamente a sud e sud-est del Paese.
L’accordo si concentra su due ambiti di intervento. Il primo mira a conservare il patrimonio forestale esistente rimasto e la biodiversità attraverso il rafforzamento delle attività di controllo già in essere per prevenire il rischio di deforestazione, incendi e il bracconaggio; si fonda su un vasto programma di sensibilizzazione e formazione che coinvolgerà le comunità e le istituzioni competenti. Il secondo prevede il ripristino di circa 13.000 ettari di superficie forestale tramite la piantumazione di circa 12 milioni di alberi di specie locali nelle zone abbandonate e degradate; a ciò si affiancheranno iniziative di agro-foresteria per incentivare pratiche agricole più sostenibili, migliorando la produttività dei terreni coltivati, a beneficio delle comunità di agricoltori locali.
Definito in partnership con le autorità ivoriane, il progetto è in linea con i Piani di Sviluppo Nazionali del Paese e con la strategia ivoriana per ridurre la deforestazione e le emissioni ad essa legate, anche facendo leva sul ripristino della superficie forestale; inoltre, si allinea al piano di decarbonizzazione di Eni, contribuendo al raggiungimento delle zero emissioni nette Upstream (Scope 1 e 2) nello sviluppo di Baleine.

The aim is to protect and restore the Ivorian forest heritage, which has lost about 90% of its surface area over the past century. The project, managed by Eni in cooperation with the Country’s institutions, has an initial duration of 20 years.
San Donato Milanese (Milan), 28 November 2024 – Eni today signed an agreement with the Côte d’Ivoire’s Ministry of Water and Forests to launch a project to preserve and restore forest areas in the country.
The initiative, which follows the feasibility study launched in September 2022 with the participation of local stakeholders, will cover 14 forests, identified in close cooperation with the competent authorities, over an area of 155,000 hectares, in the Lagunes and Comoé regions, located respectively in the south and south-east of the country.
The agreement focuses on two areas of intervention. The first aims to conserve the remaining existing forest heritage and biodiversity by strengthening the control measures already in place to prevent the risk of deforestation, fires and poaching, and it is based on an extensive awareness-raising and training programme involving local communities and relevant institutions. The second foresees the restoration of some 130,000 hectares of forest area through the planting of some 12 million trees of local species in abandoned and degraded areas, accompanied by agro-forestry initiatives to promote more sustainable farming practices and improve the productivity of cultivated land for the benefit of local farming communities.
The project, defined in partnership with the Ivorian authorities, is in line with the country’s National Development Plans and the Ivorian strategy to reduce deforestation and related emissions, including by leveraging forest area restoration. It also aligns with Eni’s decarbonisation plan, contributing to the achievement of zero net upstream emissions (Scope 1 and 2) in the Baleine development.
