Eni pubblica il report Eni for 2023 che illustra gli obiettivi di sostenibilità dell’azienda e i traguardi raggiunti nell’anno
San Donato Milanese (MI), 15 maggio 2024 – Eni annuncia oggi la pubblicazione del report volontario di sostenibilità “Eni for 2023 – A Just Transition”, che ripercorre i progressi fatti nell’ultimo anno, evidenziando l’impegno dell’azienda nella promozione di una transizione energetica equa, che punta alla neutralità carbonica al 2050.
“Nel contesto mondiale caratterizzato da dinamiche complesse e in continua evoluzione, siamo chiamati in causa per trovare risposte alle sfide socio-politiche, climatiche ed energetiche emergenti e fornire il nostro contributo, con un approccio improntato alla sicurezza, all’innovazione e alla sostenibilità”, afferma Claudio Descalzi, Amministratore Delegato di Eni. “L’energia rimane uno snodo cruciale, con le sue accezioni di sicurezza e opportunità di sviluppo. – prosegue – La transizione energetica è irreversibile, e dobbiamo garantirne la realizzazione senza sacrificare la competitività del sistema produttivo e la sostenibilità sociale”.
Il 2023 è stato un anno significativo per Eni, che ha celebrato il suo settantesimo anniversario: Eni ha reso ancora di più la decarbonizzazione parte integrante della propria strategia d’impresa, con un piano di trasformazione industriale volto ad offrire prodotti e servizi progressivamente decarbonizzati per traguardare la neutralità carbonica al 2050, con chiari obiettivi intermedi già al 2025. Anche attraverso importanti investimenti mirati in ricerca e sviluppo, Eni ha già ridotto del 40% le emissioni nette Scope 1 e 2 del settore Upstream e del 30% quelle complessive, rispetto al 2018. Particolare impegno è rivolto alla riduzione delle emissioni di metano (diminuite di oltre il 20% nel 2023 per quanto riguarda il business Upstream), come dimostra anche il riconoscimento del Gold Standard da parte del programma Oil and Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 (OGMP 2.0) dell’UNEP e l’adesione a numerose iniziative globali, tra cui il fondo Global Flaring and Methane Reduction della Banca Mondiale. L’azienda inoltre ha avviato collaborazioni strategiche con partner internazionali, come Sonatrach in Algeria, EGAS in Egitto e ADNOC negli Emirati Arabi Uniti, per supportare i suoi partner ad affrontare le sfide della transizione energetica.
In linea con l’accordo raggiunto nella COP28, Eni condivide la necessità di una transizione energetica che avvenga in maniera giusta, ordinata, equa e pragmatica. In questa prospettiva si inseriscono sia gli investimenti per ridurre le emissioni collegate alle produzioni Oil and Gas ed ampliare il portafoglio gas, vettore ponte nel percorso di transizione energetica (l’acquisizione di Neptune Energy, l’avvio della produzione dal progetto Congo LNG), sia l’espansione nel settore delle rinnovabili con i 3GW di capacità installata di Plenitude, la nascita di Enilive e l’espansione della capacità di bioraffinazione per una mobilità più sostenibile o i progetti di Carbon Capture & Storage, in particolare in Italia e nel Regno Unito. Continua inoltre l’investimento per accelerare lo sviluppo industriale della fusione a confinamento magnetico, che permetterebbe di generare grandi quantità di energia a zero emissioni in modo sicuro e virtualmente illimitato.
La just transition resta al centro della strategia di Eni e viene declinata in diversi progetti volti a gestire gli impatti sociali della trasformazione, massimizzando le opportunità di sviluppo locale e lavorando in partnership con le comunità coinvolte, nel rispetto dei diritti umani e della tutela della salute e dell’ambiente. Progetti come la conversione della raffineria di Livorno in bioraffineria, il Centro di Eccellenza Oyo per le Energie Rinnovabili e l’Efficienza Energetica in Congo o le partnership con l’ILO (International Labour Organization) per promuovere la sicurezza e la salute sul lavoro degli agricoltori delle filiere dell’agri feedstock e con IRENA per promuovere lo sviluppo di competenze per la transizione, testimoniano l’impegno dell’azienda verso una transizione equa e inclusiva, in partnership con i Paesi in cui Eni opera.

Eni publishes Eni for 2023 report outlining the company’s sustainability goals and achievements for the year
San Donato Milanese (Milan), 15 May 2024 – Eni today announces the publication of its voluntary sustainability report “Eni for 2023 – A Just Transition,” which traces the progress made over the past year, highlighting the company’s commitment to promoting a just energy transition, aiming for carbon neutrality by 2050.
“In the global context characterized by complex and evolving dynamics, we are called upon to find answers to emerging socio-political, climate and energy challenges and to give our support, with an approach focused on security, innovation and sustainability,” says Claudio Descalzi, Eni’s Chief Executive Office. “Energy remains a crucial junction, since it inherently provides a sense of security and opportunities for development. – He continues – The energy transition is irreversible, and we must ensure its realisation without sacrificing the production system and social sustainability.”
The year 2023 was a significant one for Eni as it celebrated its 70th anniversary. Eni has made decarbonization an even more integral part of its business strategy, with an industrial transformation plan aimed at offering progressively decarbonized products and services to achieve carbon neutrality by 2050, with clear intermediate targets as early as 2025. Also through major targeted investments in research and development, Eni has already reduced net Scope 1 and 2 emissions in the Upstream sector by 40% and overall emissions by 30%, compared to 2018. Particular attention is given to reducing methane emissions (decreased by more than 20% by 2023 for the Upstream business), which is also evidenced by the recognition of the ‘Gold Standard’ under the Oil & Gas Methane Partnership 2.0 programme promoted by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) and membership in numerous international initiatives, including the World Bank’s Global Flaring and Methane Reduction fund. The company also has established strategic collaborations with international partners, such as Sonatrach in Algeria, EGAS in Egypt, and ADNOC in the United Arab Emirates, to support its partners in meeting the challenges of the energy transition.
In line with the agreement reached at COP28, Eni agrees with the need for the energy transition to take place in a fair, orderly, just, and pragmatic manner. This perspective includes both the investments to reduce emissions related to Oil and Gas production and expand the gas portfolio, a bridging vector in the energy transition pathway (the acquisition of Neptune Energy, the start-up of the production from the Congo LNG project), and the expansion in the renewables sector with Plenitude’s 3 GW of installed capacity, the birth of Enilive, and the expansion of biorefining capacity for more sustainable mobility or Carbon Capture & Storage projects, particularly in Italy and the United Kingdom. Investment also continues to accelerate the industrial development of magnetic confinement fusion, which would enable the safe and virtually unlimited generation of large amounts of zero-emission energy.
Just transition remains at the heart of Eni’s strategy and is declined in several projects aimed at managing the social impacts of the transformation, maximizing local development opportunities, and working in partnership with the communities involved, while respecting human rights and protecting health and the environment. Projects such as the conversion of the Livorno refinery into a biorefinery, the Oyo Center of Excellence for Renewable Energy and Energy Efficiency in the Congo, or partnerships with the ILO (International Labor Organisation) to improve the occupational safety and health of farmers in agri-feedstock supply chains and with IRENA to promote the development of skills for the transition, testify to the company’s commitment to just and inclusive transition, in partnership with the countries where Eni operates.
