Overall consumer prices rose 1.7% year on year in February, a larger increase than the 1.1% year-to-year rise recorded in January, the Census & Statistics Department announced today. Netting out the effects of the Government’s one-off relief measures, the underlying inflation rate was 1.6% in February, also larger than that seen in the previous month. The Government attributed the increase mainly to higher charges for package tours and inbound and outbound transport fares during the Chinese New Year. The Immigration Department announced today that starting next Monday, Personal Documentation Submission Kiosks will provide expanded self-service options for Hong Kong identity card and Hong Kong Special Administrative Region passport replacements. The kiosks are located at the Immigration Headquarters in Tseung Kwan O. From next Monday, the kiosks will accept replacement applications for lost identity cards from eligible persons aged 18 or above. No prior appointment is required. The service will also extend to eligible Hong Kong SAR passport applicants aged 18 or above seeking replacements due to loss, damage, defacement or unavailability. The Development Bureau has imposed regulatory action on a contractor involved in yesterday’s fatal industrial incident at a public housing construction site in Kwai Chung. In a notification issued to the contractor today, the bureau suspended it from tendering for public works contracts in the buildings category with immediate effect, in accordance with the regulatory regime. Two incoming passengers were respectively sentenced to eight weeks' imprisonment with a fine of $4,000 and four weeks' imprisonment with a fine of $2,000 by the Fanling Magistrates' Courts today (March 20) for importing duty-not-paid cigarettes and failing to declare them to Customs officers, in contravention of Dutiable Commodities Ordinance (DCO). Customs officers intercepted a 36-year-old incoming female passenger and an accompanying 38-year-old incoming male passenger on February 4 at the Lok Ma Chau Spur Line Control Point. Hong Kong Customs yesterday (March 19) detected two dangerous drug cases and seized a total of about 23 kilograms of suspected ketamine with a total estimated market value of about $9.4 million at Hong Kong International Airport (HKIA). In the first case, Customs yesterday inspected an air parcel, declared as carrying fabric dye and arriving in Hong Kong from the Netherlands, in HKIA. Upon inspection, Customs officers found about 5kg of suspected ketamine, with an estimated market of about $2.2 million, in fabric-dye packaging in the parcel.
