PRESS RELEASE
Rotterdam will host the 2026 Artistic Word Championships and Lisbon the 2027 World Gymnaestrada
DUBROVNIK (CRO), 27 May 2022:
The Artistic Gymnastics World Championships will return to Rotterdam, Netherlands in 2026 and the World Gymnaestrada to Lisbon, Portugal in 2027. The FIG Council allocated these major events today, during its meeting in Dubrovnik.
Rotterdam previously staged the Artistic Gymnastics World Championships in 2010. Monique Kempff, President of the Royal Dutch Gymnastics Federation, commented: “We are very proud that the Netherlands and Rotterdam can once again show the world how beautiful our sport is. Our dream is to show that Gymnastics is fun, even at World Championship level. We’re going to make it something unforgettable.”
The event – the second World Championships of the cycle leading to the Los Angeles 2028 Olympic Games – is planned for 17-25 October 2026 in Rotterdam Ahoy, the same venue which staged the 2010 World Championships.
The 2012 Olympic and triple World Champion on the Horizontal Bar Epke Zonderland was the flagbearer of the Dutch delegation who made the trip to Croatia to promote the candidacy of Rotterdam.
“As a former gymnast, as a father and as a doctor, I realise how making exercise is part of your daily life,” said Zonderland to the Council.
Performing exercises in a friendly and festive atmosphere is the foundation concept of the World Gymnaestrada, the largest event of Gymnastics for All which is held every four years and draws around 20,000 participants. Lisbon, which already hosted the event in 2003, will once again be the place to be for Gymnastics enthusiasts over the coming years.
The Portuguese capital will stage not only the World Gymnaestrada from 11 to 17 July 2027 – the opening and closing ceremonies of which will take place in the Estadio Stadium – but also the World Gym for Life Challenge – the second largest Gymnastics for All event – rom 22 to 26 July 2025.
Luis Arrais, President of the Gymnastics Federation of Portugal, commented: “In 2027, Lisbon, Portugal and the world will change. We are going to challenge everyone, every country, every corner of the world with our motto: “Connecting the World”. Connecting people, sports, ideas, differences and similarities… After World Gymnaestrada 2027, the world will be a friendlier place to live. The strong will of sportswomen and sportsmen all over the world, alongside the unified Gymnastics’ community, is everything we need to connect the world.”
The next World Gymnaestrada on the calendar is planned for 2023 in Amsterdam, Netherlands.
