The Great CUT Choir triumphs with top honours at national choral festival
The Central University of Technology Choir’s exceptional talent was recently recognised when the choir was awarded the top prize in a prestigious choral music competition.
The CUT Choir embarked on a remarkable journey at the annual Buang Moloto Foundation Choral Festival in Rustenburg on 26 October 2024. Known as “The Great CUT Choir”, they faced a significant challenge, competing with other talented choirs nationwide. In a historic first, the choir participated in three competitions, securing first place in the African category and third place in the Western category. Their overall excellence was recognised with the Best Presentable Choir Award. The CUT Choir’s outstanding performance in the African and Western categories earned them R30 000, with an additional R10 000 for their overall award. Their journey to success, competing against eighteen other choirs demonstrates their quality and sheer talent.
Mr Emihle Mbatyazwa, the choir secretary and a third-year education student, said that winning in such a fashion spoke to the hard work, dedication, and skill they, as a team, have invested in the success of the Great CUT Choir.
The Great CUT Choir is a shining example of the university’s support and commitment to excellence. The Office of Student Affairs, under the leadership of Dr Sebake, Dean of Student Affairs, has been instrumental in providing the necessary resources and guidance for the choir’s success. Their support, from supervision to funding arrangements, has been crucial.
Dr Sebake highlighted the importance of such initiatives receiving adequate support and what such achievements mean for the institution. “This is a moment of pride for the entire university community, and we stand eager to continue supporting the choir’s future endeavours,” he said.
