4-10 March 2024
State of Media Freedom in Europe: Launch of the Safety of Journalists Platform Annual Report
The partner organisations will present the report at a press conference at the Thessaloniki International Exhibition & Congress Centre (154, Egnatias Street) at 10.00 am EET (9 am CET). The presentation of the report will be supported by the personal testimonies of journalists Irina Dolinina (IStories), Arianne Lavrilleux (Disclose), Szabolcs Panyi (VSquare, Direct36) and Tasos Telloglou (Inside Story).
The press conference will be followed by the round table “Press freedom in Greece – Ways forward and proposals”, organised by the Safety of Journalists Platform of the Council of Europe, the Journalists’ Union of Macedonia and Thrace and the Symbiosis – School of Political Studies in Greece affiliated with the Council of Europe (1.00-2.30 pm, EET).

The parliamentarians will then debate reports on “The right to freedom of information: ensuring access to historical documents”, “Precarious and irregular work situations of migrant seasonal and domestic workers”, and “Cultural heritage and climate change”.

The launch conference, which will feature institutional representatives, will emphasise the role of young people in promoting a culture of human rights, democracy, and the rule of law and also focus on their efforts in combating corruption to protect the environment.
4-5 March, Warsaw – PACE rapporteur Petra Bayr will carry out a fact-finding visit in the context of the preparation of her report on “Protecting women human rights defenders and people who defend women’s rights in Europe”.
5 March, Brussels – The PACE co-rapporteurs for the monitoring of Bosnia-Herzegovina, Zsolt Németh and Aleksandar Nikoloski, will meet Oliver Varhelyi, European Commissioner for Enlargement, and Valentina Superti, Director of the European Commission’s DG for Neighbourhood and Enlargement Negotiations for the Western Balkans.
Participants will include the Secretary General of the Congress and representatives of the government, the Parliament, local authorities, and civil society organisations in the Republic of Moldova.
5 March, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing five judgments concerning Albania, Austria and Serbia.
Open to media, the conference will begin on 5 March at 9.30 am. Simultaneous English/Montenegrin interpretation will be provided.
6 March, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will hold a Grand Chamber hearing in the case Ships Waste Oil Collector B.V. and Others v. the Netherlands (9.15 am).
The case concerns the transmission of data, lawfully obtained in criminal investigations through telephone tapping, to another law enforcement authority, the Competition Authority, that used those data in unrelated administrative investigations into the applicants’ companies’ involvement in price-fixing.
7 March, Brussels – On the occasion of International Women’s Day, Etilda Gjonaj, PACE General Rapporteur on violence against women, will address an inter-parliamentary meeting organised by the European Parliament’s Committee on Women’s Rights and Gender Equality, on the theme “Women in Sport”.
Participants will include members of national parliaments and members of the European Parliament.
7 March, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing 17 judgments and/or decisions concerning Azerbaijan, Bulgaria, France, Hungary, Italy, Poland, Russia and the United Kingdom.
