The Food and Agricultural Organization of the United Nations (FAO) is hosting the Second session of the UN Global Indigenous Youth Forum (UNGIYF) from 16-20 October 2023.
This year’s session of the biannual event is organized by the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus, the Association of the World Reindeer Herders, and the Nomad Indigenous Food Lab.
Over 180 Indigenous Youth from the seven socio-cultural regions of the world – (i) Africa; (ii) Asia; (iii) North America; (iv) Central and South America and the Caribbean; (v) the Arctic; (vi) the Pacific; and (vii) Central and Eastern Europe, Russian Federation, Central Asia and Transcaucasia – are meeting in person at FAO in various special events and joint sessions with the World Food Forum, the Hand- in-Hand Investment Forum, the Science and Innovation Forum, and the World Committee on Food Security (CFS).
Indigenous Youth are working on messages and recommendations that will pave the way for real action. They will deliver Policy recommendations and four Manifestos to Member states, UN Agencies and academia, outlying the concrete steps to undertake to improve Indigenous Youth lives and to make a better future a reality, leaving no one behind. Furthermore, Indigenous Youth messages will be delivered in a Declaration based on 7 points for action, deriving from 7 major concerns.
On Friday 20 October 2023, journalists are invited to participate in a UNGIYF Press Conference at FAO to talk with leaders of the Global Indigenous Youth Caucus, members of the Association of World Reindeer Herders and representatives of FAO’s Indigenous Peoples Unit.
The 2023 Session of the UNGIYF is focusing on a series of issues that affect Indigenous Youth lives, ranging from climate and biodiversity action, the impacts of pesticides and ultra-processed foods and the protection of plant genetic resources.
