CUT to induct inventor of a drought-predicting tool as full professor

Professor Pamela Dube, Vice-Chancellor and Principal of the Central University of Technology, Free State (CUT) will be hosting the Inaugural Lecture of Professor Muthoni Masinde.
Prof Masinde is a full professor of Information Technology Professor and Head of the Department of Information Technology at in the Faculty of Engineering, Built Environment, and Information Technology (FEBIT). The title of her address is:
Going back to our roots to combat climate-linked disasters – the journey across the ITIKI bridge.
Prof Masinde’s work includes the creation of the Information Technology and Indigenous Knowledge with Intelligence (ITIKI) tool- a drought predicting tool designed for Africa's small-scale farmers, which she officially launched in June 2019. The tool is envisioned to bridge the gap between indigenous knowledge and scientific knowledge.
Prof Masinde’s contribution to drought forecasting solutions for the Free State has reached worldwide coverage, including being featured on the BBC World Service. Her drought prediction tool has also seen her emerge as the winner of the 2016 CUT Vice-Chancellor’s Staff Excellence Awards: Innovation Category. She is a researcher in the area of the Internet of Things and ICT solutions for droughts, and to facilitate this research, she established the Unit for Research on Informatics for Droughts in Africa. This is the first such unit dedicated to the advancement of scientific research and development of ICTs for predicting Africa’s droughts.
Prof Masinde was behind the formation of CUT’s Association for Women in Engineering and Information Technology. She is also an active member of the Association of South African Women in Science and Engineering.
