(AGENPARL) – ESCH-SUR-ALZETTE ven 21 aprile 2023
This book is an introduction to the language of systems biology, which is spoken among many disciplines, from biology to engineering. Authors Prof. Thomas Sauter and Dr. Marco Albrecht from the Department of Life Sciences and Medicine at the University of Luxembourg draw on a multidisciplinary background and evidence-based learning.
The book starts with basic mathematical concepts, shows how to connect biological entities in structure and time, and finally introduces modelling concepts to tightly align abstraction with reality.
Prof. Thomas Sauter explains in more details how this book enables to teach systems biology in a different way.
Why did you write this book?
“The content of this book was developed over more than 15 years of teaching the course “Introduction to Systems Biology”. Over the years, the course style changed from traditional classroom teaching, with lectures on the concepts and demonstrations of exercise solutions, to more self-paced and interactive learning using the flipped-classroom method. The combination of studying the theory at one’s own pace and applying it to self-designed projects has proven to be an effective way of learning. Thus, we wanted to share this experience and decided to write this book.”
What is the added value of this book?
“This book is designed as resource for a flipped-classroom settings to allow students to study in their own speed. It opens an easy and self-paced way to study basic concepts of systems biology. In the flipped-classroom setting, teacher can shift their teaching from delivering content to explaining open questions and individual tutoring. In addition, each chapter comes with links to external videos, learning checklists, and examples to gain confidence in thinking across scientific perspectives.”
Who is concerned by this book?
“The book is mainly for students and teachers in systems biology. But given the relatively simple examples being discussed, it can also be of interest for a broader audience who want to get a first deeper insight into systems biology.”
