World Chagas Disease Day 2023: The Need for Universal Care and Surveillance starting at Primary Care Level
Friday, 14 April
14 April is World [Chagas Disease](https://worldhealthorganization.cmail19.com/t/d-l-zkigiy-iitylyihjr-v/) Day. This year’s focus is on increasing awareness of Chagas, providing access to care, and implementing surveillance, beginning at the primary care level. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated 6–7 million people worldwide are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite that causes Chagas disease, leading to some 10,000 deaths every year.
In many countries, detection rates are low (less than 10% and often less than 1%) and people suffering with the disease often encounter significant barriers to adequate healthcare. Chagas disease is prevalent among poor populations of continental Latin America but is increasingly being detected in other countries and continents.
