(AGENPARL) – TOLEDO (OHIO) mer 05 aprile 2023
Tammy Sprow and Dr. Harvey Popovich were the featured guests Tuesday at an event at The University of Toledo Medical Center marking the beginning of National Donate Life Month.
Sprow’s husband, Cory, became an organ donor after a fatal motor vehicle crash in late 2012. Popovich donated a kidney through UTMC’s transplant program in 2018 to help a woman he’d not previously met.
Held each April, National Donate Life Month highlights the ongoing need for organ, eye and tissue donation and honors those whose donations have helped save the lives of others.
Nearly 104,000 people are currently on an organ transplant waitlist in the United States, including more than 2,600 in Ohio and nearly 2,400 in Michigan.
“When this idea came to me by way of a newspaper article about a woman who had donated a kidney here to save the life of her father, it occurred to me I could use the gifts God has given me to have a significant impact on the life of another human being,” Popovich said.
UTMC set a record in 2022, completing 200 kidney transplants, up from 174 in 2021.
