PRESS RELEASE – MUNICIPALITY OF PARMA
A bridge between Pama Ukraine and the world.
Parma, 13 January 2023. The city of Parma, once again, showed its international and cosmopolitan spirit on the day of its patron saint, Sant’Ilario. The city’s volunteers who, since the outbreak of war in Ukraine, brought support and comfort to the Ukrainian population, were awarded in this special day. A prestigious award was also presented to Roberto Toscano, who had a long and important diplomatic career also as an ambassador: in Chile during Pinochet’s coup d’état in 1973 he saved about 600 opponents of the regime, hosting them in the Italian embassy and helping them to reach Italy.
A moment of great emotion was the video intervention of the Mayor of the city of Lviv, Andriy Ivanovych Sadovyi, who sent his video-contribution. His moving testimony gave the idea of the dimension of the drama of a city and his entire people, alleviated by international aid for which the mayor himself thanked the city of Parma.
From Parma, on several occasions, various missions departed to bring to war-ravaged populations basic necessities, electric generators and sanitary equipment, thanks to the commitment of the volunteers of the Pubblica Assistenza Seirs Croce Gialla Parma, Missione Valentina, Zebre Parma e Munus – Fondazione di Comunità di Parma – Onlus. They received a special mention from the Mayor, Michele Guerra, for the humanitarian contribution they have brought to the lands of Ukraine with courage, generosity and dedication, giving feelings of hope and solidarity to the populations devastated by the conflict.
The event was of international scope and of great value also due to the presence of the American Consul in Italy – Milan, Robert Needham.
Parma from 1545 to 1861 was the capital of the Duchy of Parma, Piacenza and Guastalla, cultural center and point of reference for European and world politic. From this time Sant’Ilario is the patron not only of the city but also of exiles, the legend tells that during his staying in Parma, in the Middle Ages, a cobbler gave him a pair of shoes seeing him walking barefoot on the street. The next day, instead of the shoes donated to the saint, the cobbler found a pair of golden shoes.
In this special day, the ducal city wanted to celebrate the meaning of the gift and placed itself, for a day, at the center of the world, in the name of peace and solidarity.

Un ponte tra Pama l’Ucraina e il mondo.
Parma, 13 gennaio 2023. Parma ha confermato il proprio spirito internazionale e cosmopolita, il giorno del suo patrono, Sant’Ilario, infatti, ha premiato i volontari della città che, dallo scoppio della guerra in Ucraina, hanno portato sostegno e conforto alla popolazione martoriata dalla guerra. Prestigioso riconoscimento anche per Roberto Toscano, alla spalle una lunga carriera diplomatica e di ambasciatore: in Cile durante, il colpo di stato di Pinochet nel 1973, mise in salvo circa 600 oppositori del regime, ospitandoli nell’ambasciata d’Italia e consentendo loro, poi, di raggiungere l’Italia.
La cerimonia è stata un momento particolarmente sentito che ha visto l’intervento video del sindaco della città di Leopoli, Andriy Sadovyi,, una testimonianza commovente, che ha reso la dimensione del dramma di una città e di un intero popolo, alleviata dagli aiuti internazionali, per i quali lo stesso sindaco ha ringraziato la città di Parma.
Da Parma, a più riprese, sono partite diverse missioni per potare generi di prima necessità, generatori e materiale sanitario, grazie all’impegno dei volontari di Pubblica Assistenza Seirs Croce Gialla Parma, Munus – Fondazione di Comunità di Parma – Onlus, Zebre Parma e Missione Valentina. A loro è andata una menzione speciale da parte del Sindaco, Michele Guerra, per il contributo umanitario che, con coraggio, generosità e dedizione, hanno portato nelle terre d’Ucraina, alimentando sentimenti di speranza e solidarietà nelle popolazioni sconvolte dal conflitto.
A confermare l’afflato internazionale della manifestazione la presenza del Console Generale Americano in Italia a Milano, Robert Needham.
Parma dal 1545 al 1861 è stata capitale del Ducato di Parma Piacenza Guastalla, centro culturale e di riferimento per la politica europea e mondiale.
Sant’Ilario è patrono, oltre che della città anche degli esiliati, la leggenda narra che, durante la sua presenza in città, nel medioevo, un ciabattino gli avesse donato un paio di scarpe vedendolo camminare scalzo per strada. Il giorno dopo, al posto della scarpe donate al santo, il ciabattino trovò due scarpe d’oro.
La città ducale ha così, in un certo qual modo, voluto ripercorre il senso del dono e si è posta per un giorno al centro del mondo, in nome della pace e della solidarietà.
