Ontario Speeding up the Process to File Criminal Charges in Central West Region
Digital tool will enable police to spend more time preventing and investigating crime
April 08, 2022
ST. CATHARINES — The Ontario government, in collaboration with the Ontario Court of Justice and policing partners, is expanding the eIntake digital platform that enables police to file criminal charges and Justices of the Peace to enter decisions, sign documents and request information all online. EIntake will be available in all courthouses in the Central West Region including Brampton, Brantford, Burlington, St. Catharines, Cayuga, Hamilton, Milton, Orangeville, Simcoe and Welland by April 21, 2022.
“By enabling faster, digitized data sharing between the police and the court, eIntake will allow information, documentation and evidence to be accessed on demand, eliminating time-consuming paper-based processes,” said Solicitor General Sylvia Jones. “Police will be able to spend less time carrying out administrative tasks and more time on core policing duties that directly contribute to community safety.”
This expansion follows successful launches in Ontario’s Northeast, Northwest, Central East, Toronto and West Regions. The Ontario government is working to ensure the platform is available provincewide by summer of 2022.
“We know how important it is that Ontario’s police, prosecutors and courts have modern, digital tools to help them do quick, efficient work to bring offenders to justice and keep communities safe,” said Attorney General Doug Downey. “Expanding eIntake to fast-growing cities like Brampton and Hamilton allows us to build a more resilient criminal justice system that cuts through red tape and lets police and Justices of the Peace spend more valuable time on core duties.”
Quick Facts
– The eIntake system was successfully piloted in Barrie and Orillia from November 2019 to September 2020. The system was then rolled out to the Northeast Region in December 2020, the Northwest Region in January 2021, the Central East Region from May to September 2021, the Toronto Region in December 2021 and the West Region in February 2022.
– Over 61,000 charging documents have been received by eIntake since the application’s launch.
