Plenary session, Strasbourg
State of the European Union debate.* At 09.00 on Wednesday/, Commission President Ursula von der Leyen will give her first State of the European Union address since her re-election, outlining the impact of the Commission’s work since the start of its current mandate, and its priorities for the future. MEPs will react to the Commission’s assessment and strategy, while also presenting their own priorities.
EU-US trade deal/tariffs. * On Wednesday/ afternoon/, MEPs, the Commission and the Danish Council Presidency will discuss the EU-US trade deal and the prospect of further agreements with other trade partners.
Ukraine/security guarantees/EU membership.* On Tuesday/ morning, MEPs and EU foreign policy chief Kaja Kallas will debate EU action to ensure security guarantees and a just peace for Ukraine. They will also discuss a new report encouraging the Ukrainian government to maintain reform momentum for the country’s path towards EU membership. A vote on the latter report will take place on Tuesday/.
Gaza at breaking point. *On Tuesday morning/, MEPs and EU diplomacy chief Kaja Kallas will discuss the EU response to the famine in Gaza and the need to release hostages and move towards a two-state solution. A resolution will be put to a vote by MEPs on Thursday/.
Moldovan President Maia Sandu. *On Tuesday/ at noon, the President of the Republic of Moldova Maia Sandu will address MEPs in a formal sitting. On Tuesday/ evening/, MEPs will debate with Council and Commission on strengthening Moldova’s resilience against Russian hybrid threats and malign interference. They will vote on a related resolution on Wednesday/.
Taxing large digital platforms. *With international talks on digital platform taxation in disarray following the US government’s withdrawal, MEPs will quiz the Commission on the next steps on Wednesday/.
Consumer protection/package travel directive. *Parliament will debate on Wednesday,/ and vote on Thursday,/ legislative proposals to protect travellers and ensure their refund rights in instances of travel disruption and tour operator bankruptcies.
Reducing textile and food waste. *On Tuesday/, Parliament is expected to give its final green light to new measures to prevent and reduce waste from food and textiles in the EU.
Wildfires and heatwaves. *On Tuesday/, MEPs will debate the need to strengthen EU aid and preparedness following this summer’s devastating wildfires in Southern Europe. On Thursday/, they will discuss how to provide adequate housing and health policies to help people cope with the record-breaking temperatures.
President’s diary*. On Tuesday, /EP President Roberta Metsola will meet Moldovan President Maia Sandu ahead of her plenary address. On Wednesday, /President Metsola will chair the State of the Union debate. On Friday, /she will meet with US Energy Secretary, Chris Wright.
Last-minute briefing*. On Monday /at 16:30, Parliament will hold a press briefing on the plenary session, which starts at 17:00. Political group briefings will take place on Tuesday /morning.
