EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum on Wednesday, 19 November [3]
The first EU Parliamentary Democracy Forum will examine contemporary threats to democratic governance and explore best practices to increase resilience.
When: *Wednesday 19 November 2025, 11:00 CET
Where: *European Parliament in Brussels, Hemicycle, Paul-Henri Spaak building, 3rd floor and via webstreaming. [4]
How*: Accredited [5] journalists can attend the forum in person.
The forum [6] will bring together MEPs and national parliamentarians [7], officials from other European institutions, civil society representatives and experts.
The President of the European Parliament, Roberta Metsola [8], and the Speaker of the Danish Parliament, Søren Gade [9], will open the session. There will then be a keynote speech by María Ressa [10], journalist and Nobel Peace Prize Laureate. Commissioner Michael McGrath [11], responsible for Democracy, Justice, the Rule of Law and Consumer Protection, will join in a conversation expected to touch on the European Democracy Shield proposal.
Key topics to be addressed:
strengthening parliamentary democracy through citizen engagement [12], focusing on grassroots initiatives, youth participation, and building trust in institutions; overcoming political polarisation [13], examining ideological divisions, rising political violence, and ways to foster dialogue; and building resilience [14], exploring measures to protect democracies from hybrid threats, foreign interference, disinformation, and the responsible use of digital technologies.
