SACAQM and Evotel Join Forces to Monitor Gauteng’s Air Quality
Air quality monitoring in Gauteng is set to receive a significant boost. The South African Atmospheric Quality Monitoring (SACAQM) initiative has partnered with leading Fibre Network Operator, Evotel, to expand the reach of air quality sensors across the province.
Through this collaboration, SACAQM will supply its cutting-edge cost-effective technology, AI_r. These devices are designed to measure air pollution levels in real-time and provide critical data for analysis.
The AI_r technology has been developed with the support from the Department of Science and Innovation, the National Research Foundation, iThemba LABS, and the Canadian International Development Research Centre (IDRC), and in collaboration with the European Laboratory CERN.
Evotel will host these sensors within its extensive network infrastructure. This enables widespread deployment and ensures efficient connectivity for data collection.
The AI_r solution includes advanced dashboards and data analytics powered by artificial intelligence. These tools help identify pollution hotspots and trends, empowering authorities and communities to take informed action.
“By working with Evotel, we’re taking a significant step forward in addressing air pollution challenges in Gauteng,” said Prof. Bruce Mellado, Executive Director of SACAQM. “This partnership allows us to make high-quality environmental data accessible to all.”
Gauteng faces growing air pollution challenges due to rapid urbanization and industrial activity. Poor air quality has severe health implications, particularly for vulnerable populations.
Real-time monitoring helps identify areas most affected by pollution. With reliable data, policymakers can implement targeted interventions to improve air quality.
SACAQM’s AI_r sensors are affordable and scalable. They represent a new era in environmental monitoring by combining advanced technology with practical application.
Evotel’s network infrastructure ensures seamless operation of these sensors. “We’re proud to support SACAQM in this vital initiative,” said Albert Oosthuysen, Evotel’s CEO. “Together, we’re creating a healthier and more sustainable Gauteng.”
This partnership highlights the role of technology in addressing environmental challenges. It demonstrates how collaboration between sectors can drive innovative solutions.
