City of Toronto to announce names for new Island and park in the Port Lands
Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillor Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth) will be joined by Elder Shelley Charles and members of an Indigenous Advisory Circle to announce the names of the new Island and surrounding park in the Port Lands.
The new island was created as part of an extensive Port Lands Flood Protection project which re-naturalized the mouth of the Don River over six years of construction. Prior to the naming process directed by City Council and led by the Indigenous Advisory Circle including Elders and Knowledge Keepers, the area has been referred to as Villiers Island.
Date: Friday, November 1
Time: 12:30 to 2 p.m., with remarks at 1 p.m.
Location: Meet at 62 Villiers St. (Parking in front of the Keating Channel Pub & Grill at the address)
The names of the new island and surrounding park will be brought forward to the Tuesday, November 5 Executive Committee followed by Toronto City Council at its November meeting. The staff report on the names will be made available at: https://secure.toronto.ca/council/#/committees/2468/24403
