Tuesday, 17 September World Patient Safety Day — “Improving diagnosis for patient safety”
Up to 16% of preventable patient harm is the result of an error during diagnosis. Errors can occur at any stage of the diagnostic process and can prolong illness and sometimes cause disability or even death. This World Patient Safety Day, the focus is on “Improving diagnosis for patient safety” with the slogan “Get it right, make it safe!”. The day aims to raise awareness of diagnostic safety and encourages collective action by stakeholders to prevent and reduce diagnostic errors.
In advance of the day, WHO organized a Global Consultation entitled ‘Improving diagnostic safety and implementing the Global Patient Safety Action Plan 2021-2030’. Participants reviewed a draft implementation model for improving diagnostic safety and discussed different approaches to address preventable harm in health care as part of broader health system strengthening efforts. More information on the Consultation can be found here.
