FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE
22 July 2024
CUT academic elected as new Chairperson of the African Languages Association of Southern Africa Board
Dr. Mantoa Molete has proven herself as an exceptional academic and a genuine leader at the recent International Conference of the African Language Association of Southern Africa (ALASA) held in Durban from 09-12 July 2024.
She was elected as the new Chairperson of the Board of the African Languages Association of Southern Africa, which demonstrates her capabilities and the association’s confidence in her.
Dr Molete is a Manager in the Department of Communication Science at Welkom Campus. Her leadership will be instrumental in guiding the board, along with the editorial team of the South African Journal of African Languages (SAJAL), a journal of ALASA and a DHET-accredited journal printed by Taylor & Francis.
“I am excited to be part of this association as it will assist us in creating more platforms and access to enhance our influence and contributions in the language fraternity, especially on promotion of research in indigenous language development, planning and policies, which are the focal area of our research as an institution,” she said.
Her election marks a significant milestone, as she becomes the third woman and the second black woman to lead the association since its establishment in 1979, which demonstrates the association’s commitment to equity and excellence.
Over the years, the association has seen extraordinary growth, establishing itself as a leading organisation in the Southern Region. Its vision is to facilitate engagement and collaboration among researchers, students, and educators in African languages and literature. The association also promotes research, language development, and effective oral and written communication in a multilingual society. Additionally, it is involved in matters related to language planning and policy, education policy, and building connections with other organisations sharing similar interests.
