18TH-20TH OCTOBER 2023 PALAZZO SERSANTI, IMOLA
Messaggio di benvenuto del Presidente
Care/i Colleghe/i,
tanto efficaci quanto adeguate.
Unite, ovvero “Buona Salute e Benessere”.
ricerca animale.
È a queste
XXIV CONGRESS OF THE ITALIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH
pratica sperimentale in modo sostenibile.
abstract presentati in anteprima al Congresso.
risultati.
E di nuovo, buon compleanno SIRC, e benvenuti a Imola!
Vincenzo Lionetti, Presidente
18TH-20TH OCTOBER 2023 PALAZZO SERSANTI, IMOLA
President’s Welcome Message
Dear Colleague(s),
The Congress of the Italian Society of Cardiovascular Research (SIRC) represents the biennial
reference event for all cardiovascular sciences in our country. This edition holds special importance
as SIRC celebrates its thirtieth anniversary. Back in 1993, Professor Claudio Marcello Caldarera,
already a professor of biochemistry at the University of Bologna, had the intuition to establish
SIRC as a meeting and discussion platform for Italian scientific excellences operating worldwide
in the field of cardiovascular research. To host the Congress, he chose Imola, the hometown of
Antonio Maria Valsalva, a distinguished physician, anatomist and surgeon known for his rigorous
scientific method, whose 300th death anniversary falls this year. Imola, a city with a Gold Medal
for Military Valor, to whose people, hard hit by the flood, SIRC remains close from the first hour.
Today, SIRC has grown and revitalized thanks to the excellent work of those who came before us,
continually attracting the brightest minds from different scientific fields. Despite the instability of
the present and the uncertainty of the future, Italian cardioscientists tirelessly devote themselves
with great passion and enthusiasm to experimental activities, never losing sight of those who
suffer from acute and chronic cardiovascular diseases and deserve responses as effective as they
are adequate.
Therefore, together with the Board of Directors and the members of the Scientific Committee,
we have designed a Congress inspired by United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 3,
“Good Health and Well-being” of the 2030 Agenda. The aim is to position SIRC to meet the new
biomedical challenges of a world profoundly changed after the pandemic.
In this edition, we propose a program of high scientific value, structured into eight macroareas, to discuss how aging, gender differences, artificial intelligence, lifestyles, climate
change, environmental factors, and COVID19 are defining new objectives of basic and applied
cardiovascular research and their increasingly personalized and precise clinical perspectives. We
will also address the integrity and ethics of animal research. To those who often look down on
our work, questioning the methods used by researchers, while respecting ethics and the law, I
recall that behind the doors of every laboratory lie the tears, hopes and prayers of endless lines of
suffering people who, along with their families, anxiously await a solution.
It is to these individuals that we must be accountable, remembering that there is no distinction
between great and small discoveries. Each step forward in knowledge is always an important
milestone for the health and well-being of humanity.
XXIV CONGRESS OF THE ITALIAN SOCIETY OF CARDIOVASCULAR RESEARCH
Let us continue to open the doors of SIRC to dialogue with schools, universities, and research centers
shaping the generations of the future, with other Scientific Societies to enhance effectiveness,
with the Healthcare System and patient associations, and with the world of biomedical industry,
which implements technological innovations to improve experimental practices sustainably.
In an increasingly interconnected world, the 30th Congress of SIRC will have six exceptional
partners by its side: the Municipality of the City of Imola, the Cassa di Risparmio Foundation
of Imola, which has always supported and promoted the talent of young Italian cardiovascular
scientists, including through the prestigious “Antonio Maria Valsalva” Prize, the National
Institute for Cardiovascular Research, which since 1996 has been fostering collaborations
between universities, research institutions, and industries in cardiovascular scientific activities,
the Italian Foundation for the Heart, an active member of the World Heart Federation and the
European Heart Network, which has been promoting cardiovascular prevention since 1990, the
International Academy of Cardiovascular Sciences, which has been advancing cardiovascular
education and research worldwide since 1996, and the prestigious international scientific
journal Vascular Pharmacology (IF 4), which has been dedicated for years to the dissemination of
abstracts presented in advance at the Congress.
The outcomes of the scientific and technical discussions will provide SIRC with significant insights
to continue identifying new horizons in cardiovascular sciences to be shared with institutions,
with the ultimate goal of improving the health and well-being of each of us through responsible
and up-to-date cardiovascular research.
I extend my greetings to all participants and speakers, and I hope that the congress will be fruitful
in yielding prosperous results.
Once again, happy birthday SIRC, and welcome to Imola!
Vincenzo Lionetti, President
