In “Trafficking Data”, Kokas considers how data exploitation and privacy affect social media, gaming, and other technology services that play major roles in millions of lives. She argues that lax US policy toward governing the tech industry has allowed China to take a leading role in determining how data is governed, and offers recommendations for addressing these issues.
The Kluge Center’s Andrew Breiner will interview Kokas on “Trafficking Data” and her fieldwork in the US and China. The interview will be followed by a reception.
Kokas is a former Kluge Fellow and is currently C.K. Yen Chair at the Miller Center, Director of the University of Virginia East Asia Center, and Associate Professor of Media Studies at the University of Virginia. Her previous book, published in 2017, is “Hollywood Made in China.”
