Statement from Premier Heather Stefanson on First Meeting with Winnipeg Mayor-Elect Scott Gillingham
On behalf of the Manitoba government, I want to congratulate mayor-elect Scott Gillingham on his successful campaign to become the next mayor of the City of Winnipeg. This afternoon, I was very pleased to host the mayor-elect at the Legislative Building for our first in-person meeting, as he prepares for the responsibilities entrusted to him by the people of Winnipeg.
Mayor-elect Gillingham and I discussed our similar collaborative approaches and our shared goals to build on the positive working relationship between the Manitoba government and the City of Winnipeg. Both of us are committed to co-operative action to get things done and deliver results for the benefit of Winnipeg and all Manitobans.
We discussed exciting initiatives that will have tremendously positive and lasting impacts for the city and province, such as the recently announced expansion of CentrePort Canada, strategic infrastructure investments including Phase 2 and 3 of the north end wastewater treatment plant and transitioning the city’s transit system to a cleaner, greener future.
We also discussed effective action to address challenges. We both recognized the recent rise in violent crime, in addition to the mental health and addictions challenges facing the city and our province.
We both committed to working collaboratively to help make our communities safer, improve the health and well-being of the most vulnerable, and support law enforcement officers.
I would also like to again congratulate Mayor Brian Bowman for his two terms as Winnipeg’s mayor, his successes and achievements on behalf of Winnipeggers, and his dedication and commitment to public service. I wish him all the very best in his future endeavours.
