Fire Prevention Week 2022 “Plan a record-breaking escape”
Next week, the City of Toronto is celebrating Fire Prevention Week from October 9 to 15. During this important week, Fire Chief Matthew Pegg is challenging everyone in Toronto to plan and practise a home escape plan with their household.
This year is the 100th anniversary of Fire Prevention Week. The theme for 2022 is “Fire won’t wait. Plan your escape.”
It is important for residents to plan and practise a home escape plan with everyone in their household. Residents are asked to draw a map of each level of their house, apartment or condo and identify all the different exits that they can use in case of a fire emergency. Once the home escape plan is completed, residents are asked to practise it and ensure that children, older adults and people with disabilities are included in the plan. By law, residents must install and maintain working smoke alarms on every storey of their home and outside each sleeping area.
Every family should know what to do in case of a fire. Chief Pegg is urging all people to “Plan a record-breaking escape” and practise it regularly to ensure they are prepared for a safe escape in an emergency. Information on how to plan a record-breaking escape is available on the City’s Home Fire Escape Planning webpage: http://www.toronto.ca/community-people/public-safety-alerts/safety-tips-prevention/home-high-rise-school-workplace-safety/home-fire-escape-planning/. More information is also available on the City’s High-Rise Fire Safety webpage: http://www.toronto.ca/community-people/public-safety-alerts/safety-tips-prevention/home-high-rise-school-workplace-safety/high-rise-fire-safety/.
