Gold has long been associated with royalty, luxury, prestige and extravagance. Taking a special place in manuscript traditions across the globe whether in inscriptions, illuminated paintings, golden writing or gilded book covers.
Showcasing 50 extraordinary items in 17 languages from different parts of the world, our Gold exhibition explores how this precious metal transformed art in manuscripts and books.
One item not to miss is the Queen Mary Psalter. It is one of the most extensively illustrated biblical manuscripts ever produced and contains over 1000 images. The manuscript is a magnificent display of intricate gold illustrations, certainly fit for its namesake owner Queen Mary I.
See the beauty of the Queen Mary Psalter for yourself. Gold is open until 2 October 2022.
