Three people who held illegal gatherings during the UK’s emergency period (March 2020 to July 2021) were convicted of the offences at Westminster Magistrates’ Court on, Wednesday 29 June.
Detective Inspector Chris Rudd, said: “It was saddening to have to deal with these incidents where large numbers of people illegally gathered in breach of Covid regulations during a national emergency period.
“At a time when so many members of the public were making considerable sacrifices and abiding by the rules to keep others safe, these individuals acted selfishly and risked spreading the virus.
“However, our policing response demonstrated that we were prepared to take action and issue fixed penalty notices to those deliberately flouted the rules.”
All three have received fines, they are:
Piers Corbyn, 75, (10.03.47) of East Street, SE17 was found guilty of the following offences:
– On 29 August 2020, in Trafalgar Square, he held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 26 September 2020, in Trafalgar Square he held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 24 October 2020, in Westminster, he held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place in the Tier 2 area contrary to regulation 5(1)(a) and (2) and paragraph 3(1) and (5)(b)(iii) of Schedule 1 to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Local COVID-19 Alert Level) (High) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 31 December 2020, on the South Bank, Southwark he held/involved in holding gathering of more than 30 persons on specific public outdoor land in Tier 4 area contrary to regulation 10(1)(a) and (2)and paragraph 5(1) and (5) of Schedule 3A to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (All Tiers) (England) Regulations 2020.
Corbyn was fined £750 for the August, September and October offences. He also had to pay £275 in prosecution costs and £109 in surcharges.
Louise Creffield, 36, (27.05.86) of Reading Road, Brighton was found guilty of:
– On 29 August 2020, in Trafalgar Square, held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 26 September 2020, in Trafalgar Square held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 24 October 2020, in Westminster, held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place in the Tier 2 area contrary to regulation 5(1)(a) and (2) and paragraph 3(1) and (5)(b)(iii) of Schedule 1 to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Local COVID-19 Alert Level) (High) (England) Regulations 2020.
Creffield was fined £250 for all three dates. She also had to pay £50 in prosecution costs and £34 in surcharges.
Vincent Dunmall 55, (28.07.66) of Clarendon Green, Orpington was found guilty of:
– On 29 August 2020, in Trafalgar Square, held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 26 September 2020, in Trafalgar Square held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place during emergency period contrary to regulations 5B(1), (2)(b)(iii) and 8(1) and (4) of the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Restrictions) (No.2) (England) Regulations 2020;
– On 24 October 2020, in Westminster, held/involved in holding a gathering of more than 30 people on land in public outdoor place in the Tier 2 area contrary to regulation 5(1)(a) and (2) and paragraph 3(1) and (5)(b)(iii) of Schedule 1 to the Health Protection (Coronavirus, Local COVID-19 Alert Level) (High) (England) Regulations 2020.
Dunmall was found £175 fine all tree months. He also had to pay £75 in prosecution costs and £34 in surcharges.
