The Week Ahead: Key Events and Meetings

“Academic Freedom in Action 2025” – a high-level conference
The conference will explore how shared norms and stronger protections can help universities and society respond to increasing challenges to academic freedom, posed by both long-standing and new threats – including political interference, censorship, harassment, self-censorship, restrictions on institutional autonomy, foreign interference, transnational repression, SLAPPs and online intimidation.
The event will include the launch of the Report on the Erosion of Academic Freedom in Europe, prepared by independent experts from the Council of Europe’s Expert Working Group. The report will be presented during the conference by its authors.
Third African Forum on cybercrime and electronic evidence
The forum is open to the press and some sessions/workshops will be livestreamed.

The seminar will gather representatives from the Finnish Government, Parliament, national institutions, international organisations, civil society and the expert community. Discussions will reflect on a decade of progress in implementing the Convention and highlight future priorities for strengthening protection for women and girls from gender-based and domestic violence. A special commentary address will be delivered by Marja Ruotanen, Director General of the Directorate of Human Dignity, Equality and Governance of the Council of Europe, who will provide an international perspective on current and emerging trends in preventing and combating gender-based violence.
25 November, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing seven judgments concerning Albania, Azerbaijan, Denmark, Greece, Romania, Türkiye and the United Kingdom.
The opening will bring together representatives of the government, local authorities, international organisations, diplomatic missions and civil society. Official statements will be delivered by President Maia Sandu, Vice-President of Parliament Doina Gherman, EU Ambassador Iwona Piórko, UN Resident Coordinator Yesim Oruc, and Hallvard Gorseth, Director of Equal Rights and Dignity, Council of Europe.
The event will gather senior representatives of the justice system for an exchange on psychological violence, digital violence, and femicide; inter-institutional coordination; and good practices from other Council of Europe member states. Opening remarks will be delivered by Hallvard Gorseth, Director of the Directorate for Equal Rights and Dignity, alongside national and international partners.
27 November, Strasbourg – The European Court of Human Rights will notify in writing 55 judgments and/or decisions concerning Armenia, Azerbaijan, Belgium, Bulgaria, Croatia, Cyprus, France, Georgia, Germany, Greece, Hungary, Italy, the Republic of Moldova, Montenegro, North Macedonia, Poland, Romania, Serbia, Slovakia, Türkiye and Ukraine.
A joint press conference is scheduled on Monday 1 December (place and time to be confirmed).
