TERNA: AROUND 90 MILLION EUROS SAVED BY THE ITALIAN
ELECTRICITY SYSTEM DURING THE 7 MONTHS OF SUMMER TIME
Consumption down by 370 million kWh since 26 March, with 180 thousand tonnes
of CO2 emissions saved
Around 2,1 billion euros and 11,3 billion kWh in electricity saved since 2004
Rome, 26 October 2023 – According to data from Terna, Italy’s power grid operator led by
Giuseppina Di Foggia, during the seven months of summer time, the Italian electricity
system lowered its energy consumption by 370 million kWh, or about the average annual
usage of 140,000 households. This translates to savings of approximately 90 million euros.
Summer time is also good for the environment, as lower electricity consumption reduces
CO2 emissions by around 180 thousand tonnes.
For 2023, summer time started on Sunday 26 March and ends on Sunday 29 October, when
we will revert to standard time. According to data from the Italian Regulatory Authority for
Energy Networks and Environment, during this period, the cost of an average kilowatt hour
for “protected domestic customers” was about 24,5 euro cents before taxes.
Terna’s analysis shows that Italy’s lower summer time electricity consumption amounted to
about 11,3 billion kWh from 2004 to 2023, translating to roughly 2,1 billion euros in savings
for users.
