PRESS CONFERENCE:
STUDY LAUNCH,
Music streaming market – The place and role of authors and composers
Why a study on music streaming?
The debate over fairness in the ever-expanding music streaming market is gaining traction
around the world from the US to the UK, and across the European continent. There is a
need to look more closely at how songwriters and composers are connected to this thriving
economy and what can be done to improve their currently neglected situation. GESAC
therefore commissioned this study to Emmanuel Legrand of Legrand Network, who has over
30 years of experience and world-renowned expertise in the music sector, to reect on the
value of creators and their societies for the streaming economy, as well as to shed a light on
their concerns, needs, and expectations from this market.
Based on existing research and data in the eld, the study provides a more in-depth examination
and thorough analysis of the current situation from the perspective of creators – songwriters
and composers.
Toward a more sustainable market
The study carefully analyses the bottlenecks that prevent a more sustainable and meaningful
growth of the music streaming market for authors and composers and identies the ways
forward to address various sources of imbalance and unfairness through cooperation, increased
responsibility on the part of market players, and, where necessary, through policy actions at
the EU level.
With the extent and speed of digital transformation, GESAC believes that the market’s
structural issues must be addressed in order to ensure more sustainable and meaningful
growth for the entire cultural and creative sector, including the creators who fuel this economy.
Therefore, there is a need to better understand the challenges preventing such growth and
nd the most appropriate ways to address them.
