Civic Spark Fellowship:
Graham Deleon
The City of Sacramento Department of Public Works Division of Mobility and Sustainability partnered with CivicSpark, to host a CivicSpark fellow for 11-months of public service.
CivicSpark is an AmeriCorps program sponsored by the Public Health Institute in partnership with local and state agencies to provide young professionals career development and build capacity for local public agencies to address community resilience issues. CivicSpark fellows implement a sustainable, resilience project that has long-term capacity to continue after the fellow’s service year.
Our CivicSpark fellow, Graham DeLeon, is approaching the end of her 11-month service year. We would like to spotlight her contributions to the City of Sacramento and highlight her accomplishments during her fellowship!
Throughout her fellowship, Graham advanced her career goals of becoming a transportation planner by learning crucial sector knowledge and skills including managing projects, developing partnerships with private property owners and businesses, and engaging with Sacramento’s communities.
She managed bike parking requests from residents and businesses and installed over 100 bike parking spaces and 10 drop zones throughout Sacramento. Additionally, she coordinated the installation of bike racks with private property owners and local businesses, such as at La Esperanza Supermarket.
Additionally, Graham led the Urban Biking and Scooting 101 Class to teach the community about bike safety tips and how to enjoy the ride. She helped table at over 15 events to engage with the community in discussions about the city’s transportation planning projects.
”I am grateful for my time with the City of Sacramento and the opportunity to install bike parking to promote a sustainable, bikeable city,” says Graham.
Inspired by her work with the city, Graham plans to attend Harvard University Graduate School of Design for a Master in Urban Planning (MUP) degree.

Sustainable Commuting:
Take your Bike on Transit Whether you‘re going back to school, going to work, or meeting with friends, consider a sustainable, lower cost commute!
Did you know that 57% of Sacramento’s greenhouse gas emissions are from transportation? Did you also know that on average, it costs $0.81 per mile to operate and maintain your car, according to the US Department of Transportation? You may also have to pay for parking at work. These daily costs can add up fast. But there are ways to save money.
Biking and taking transit make for a great sustainable, affordable way to get around. Did you know 100% of SacRT’s buses are equipped with front loading bicycle carriers?
Use the City’s existing bike facilities map, which shows different types of bikeways to plan your route to travel on bike-friendly streets.
Consult the SacRT routes and schedules for more information about planning your commute.
You can also take your bike on light rail or securely store your bike in a bike locker located at approximately 20 light rail stations throughout the city.
SacRT provides an informational video tutorial to assist with loading and unloading your bicycle.

Tip of the Month
Active Transportation Education Series: Panniers
Biking is a great way to get around town, but how do you carry things? Specifically designed to clip onto the rear racks of your bike, panniers (also known as satchels or bike bags) are a great way to carry and keep items, like laptops, lunchboxes, personal items, and more securely fastened to your bike when traveling.
Watch a short video to find out how you can add panniers to your ride.
