More must-see items
Anglo-Saxon Herbal Knowledge
This is the only illustrated collection of herbal remedies that survives from Anglo-Saxon England. On this page, chamomile is prescribed for sore eyes and ‘harts clover’ for bruises, adder bites and gout.
Gardening for Ladies
Science-fiction author, feminist, botanical artist and gardener Jane Loudon wrote and illustrated this pioneering gardening manual in 1840, encouraging women new to gardening to be more hands-on in their gardens.
Meanwhile Gardens
‘Meanwhile gardens’ transform empty land into gardens before development. The idea began in 1976 when artist Jamie McCullough turned a neglected Paddington plot into a community garden. The original garden still exists, and the term gained popularity, as seen in this 1981 poster.
